In this double bill we explore Street Art, what shapes it, who it gives voice to, and the importance of art in public spaces. Art On The Streets, narrated by Michael Rosen, explores art’s role in providing a voice, a platform and a meeting point in the midst of conflict, themes which resonate today. Focusing on the 1943 exhibition For Liberty created by the anti-fascist artists’ collective.
Basquiat was shaped by the 1970s NYC that he grew up in; the times, the people and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became, and street art as now know it. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City that was soon to be lost to the 1980s boom.
