This event is a collaboration with MayDay Rooms, an archive and resource space in London for social movements, experimental and marginalised cultures and their histories, and the expression of oppressed groups. MayDay Rooms have been granted Lottery funding to create the first archive of Eco-Action: encompassing paraphernalia that documents the ecological direct action campaigns, and the broader movement, from the 1960s to now.
Together we will be screening Free Party, a documentary that charts the government crackdown on the free party and environmental movements of the early 90’s via the Criminal Justice Act and the Battle of the Beanfield.
MayDay Rooms will be exhibiting archive material from groups such as J18, Reclaim the Streets,and ecological direct action struggles. After the film we will be holding a Q&A on the interwoven topics from past to present, with Dr Oscar Berglund who holds a global reputation for his expertise on climate change activism and the criminalisation of protest. This will be a fascinating event that really showcases the continuing relevance or archive, how archiving is blasting its way into the progressive present and what we can all learn from it. Not to be missed!
