It’s our birthday (well, one of them!). 1996 was the year that the Curzon was saved from re-development, the year we became community owned. It’s a huge part of the Curzon history, a corner stone in who we are, and the ‘thing’ that preserved this treasure for future generations.
This year, we will hold our annual Heritage Open Days tour where you can come and look behind the scenes at the layers of Curzon history – for free. Then we will by screening Brassed Off for a 1996 price.
Tours are from 12pm – 1.30pm (tea and cake available to purchase in the Oak Room).

Brassed Off is a well-loved British classic. Fittingly we will be projecting it just as we did back in 1996 – on 35mm. And it turns out (we really didn’t know this) that Brassed Off was the first film screened after the cinema was saved and became community owned! We will have a very special introduction by some of the people involved back in ’96, and if you come on the tour you might even get to see the projection room.
Brassed Off: Ewan McGregor and Pete Poslethwaite star in this typically British award winning comedy about a Yorkshire mining town turning to music for inspiration when faced with the loss of its way of life. A romantic comedy with the miner’s strike as backdrop – you don’t get much more British than that!
