A university lecturer turns to falconry following the death of her father and builds a deep connection with a goshawk in this drama based on the memoir by Helen Macdonald.
H is for Hawk was filmed in locations across the South West, including Clevedon. The starring goshawk of the film and handlers live in Tickenham.
We are thrilled to be joined after this screening for a live in-person conversation between the film’s Director Philippa Lowthorpe, and Bird Trainer Lloyd Buck, hosted by Head of Bristol Film School, Freya Billington.
Philippa Lowthorpe is an award winning film and television director, winning the Deluxe Director Award at the WFTV Film and Television Awards for the miniseries Three Girls. She recently directed episodes of the second season of The Crown and the 2020 film Misbehaviour.
Lloyd Buck has been training birds for more than two decades. Over the years he and his wife Rose have been involved with over a hundred different film and television productions. They have a team of birds specially trained for filming both on location and in studio situations. They also regularly train new birds for specific projects. Lloyd and Rose are the world’s experts at in-flight and tracking filming with birds.
Freya Billington is the Head of Bristol Film School. She ran Film Production at University of Gloucestershire for five years and was Joint Programme Leader of Filmmaking at University of the West of England. Freya is a Fulbright Scholar and Fellow of Syracuse University, NY where she completed her MFA in Fine Art Film.
