chevalier

by the Clevedon School Year 10 work experience students

“The film Chevalier is an incredible insight into the untold story of Joseph Bologne, a black man who came from nothing, became friends with the queen of France and was partly responsible for the French revolution.

The film starts dramatically with Joseph upstaging Mozart himself, which immediately introduces his unbelievable talent and his admirable confidence, despite the racism he faces throughout his life and being the son of a slave.

We then get transported back in time to Joseph as a young man, being dropped off at a prestigious French academy of music by his father, a slave owner. After leaving school, he battles his way through hatred and discrimination to become Chevalier, a knight of France.

The rest of the film follows his life as a wealthy and repeated French gentleman, as he goes through love affairs, victory and denial. The film ends with the start of the French revolution, and is ultimately about loyalty to lifelong friends, or to the right cause.

The motif of Chevalier’s incredible compositions is prominent throughout the film, constantly reminding the audience of the genius of Joseph Bologne and his lasting impact on France. The masterpiece that is Chevalier unveils the untold and fascinating story about chasing your dreams and defying society’s expectations. The film effectively portrays the ever so relevant theme of racism and community, as well as highlighting the importance of self-belief and determination.

Us Clevedon School Year 10 work experience students would highly recommend Chevalier to anyone who loves historical inspiring true narratives. Watch now at the Curzon Cinema!
