Allee Willis was a true original—a woman ahead of her time who refused to conform and gave her whole self to art in all its most playful forms. Everything she encountered became infused with her distinctive creative spirit. She’s the most famous songwriter you’ve never heard of—and one who deserves to be a household name. As so often happens, mavericks (particularly female ones) are more widely recognised posthumously.
This psychedelic and vibrant documentary explores the life of the Grammy Award-winning artist behind some of the most iconic works of popular culture. Willis wrote the theme tune to Friends, contributed to the musical hit The Color Purple, and co-wrote Earth, Wind & Fire classics September and Boogie Wonderland. Her creativity extended far beyond songwriting into set design, art exhibitions, and video—yet she remained largely unknown.
The film offers a fascinating and inspiring insight into a prolific artist who saw the world as her canvas. It’s a celebration of individuality, creativity, and the joy of making—encouraging us all to hold a little of Allee’s spirit within ourselves, and to finally learn her name.
