Bernie Jordan made global headlines on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in 2014. The 89 year old World War II veteran took it upon himself to ‘escape’ from his care home, without anyone knowing, to travel to France to join his comrades-in-arms on a beach in Normandy.
This moving retelling of Bernie’s (Sir Michael Caine) 48 hour adventure remembers the real stories of those who gave everything in combat and back home. The late Glenda Jackson plays Bernie’s wife Rene (who Caine starred alongside in the ‘The Romantic Englishwoman’ in Joseph Losey’s 1975 drama) and the film also explores their 60-year marriage.
Written by BAFTA-nominee William Ivory (Made in Dagenham) this is a heart-warming film that tells some of the lessons we can all learn from the Greatest Generation.
