“A truly impressive and expressive film about childhood … Dazzling, intuitive, humane, passionate, and sensitive to life’s growing pains.” – Little White Lies
“This tender and sweet animation from film-makers Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han is an involving, poignant study of early childhood; how fragile it is, and how strong you feel yourself to be to have outlived or surpassed it. It is based on the autobiographical novella The Character of Rain by Belgian author Amélie Nothomb, published in 2000.” – The Guardian
Amélie (Loïse Charpentier) is a little Belgian girl born in Japan, whose first word is neither “Mama” nor “Papa,” but “aspirateur” (“vacuum cleaner” in French). As her third birthday approaches, her world of adventures and discoveries is about to change. To capture the perspective of a young girl with wide-eyed curiosity, Little Amélie (2025) is animated in an impressionistic style, using pastel colors and omitting the usual contours and outlines. Complementing this visual approach, the film echoes the narrative techniques of Japanese master animator Hayao Miyazaki. It won the Audience Award at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
