Rolling:

  • Made me smile, and that’s a great quality to pull off
  • Very clever to be able to make me see the orange as a character (a friendly one too)
  • Great framing choices throughout
  • A lovely light relaxed tone
  • Played like a really clever TV ident…and I mean that in a very complimentary way—TV idents are an art-form in themselves!)

Belief:

  • A thoroughly confidently produced film
  • Exploratory and thought -provoking
  • Creative  and confident editing
  • Directing and Acting in your own film, quite a feat to pull off!

INNOVATION

Winner

Alex Hemsley  "ISOLATION"

The Newall Innovation Award was donated by Clevedon School

Comments

  • Utterly confident in its execution
  • Unnerving and unpredictable, which was great
  • Even though I didn’t know what was going on (until the caption at the end), the filmmakers clearly did!
  • Very creative shot choices
  • Some really bold editing choices
  • David Lynchian for sure….and that ain’t a bad thing at all!

BEST FICTION

Winner

Joshua Kingsley-Jones  "JACK"

£50 Prize donated by the Curzon Community Cinema

Comments

  • ‘Jack’s performance was great
  • The piece obviously reflected the style of a certain faux docu comedy. But it did it well, playing cleverly to the established rules of that sub-genre, which is important.
  • Loved the finger-cut moment—laughed out loud there. The timing of the split-edit to reveal the bandaged finger was superbly judged; made it all the funnier.

BEST NON_FICTION

Winner

Sam Shellard, Ellie Jacques & Aaron Carlile-Jones  "MIND"

£50 Prize donated by boomsatsuma

Comments

  • Really well performed
  • Well staged. Loved the idea of the girl being shot against the corner, and the symmetry of the framing
  • It had a hypnotic effect which was really strong, until the dramatic change, which was effective for all the right reasons
  • Caption design was well thought out too
