Curzon Community Cinema, Clevedon

On 29th November 2006 the Curzon celebrated its 10th anniversary as a community cinema.

As we embark on our next decade it has been fascinating and heart-warming to reflect on what we have already achieved. Ever since The Curzon became a community cinema in November 1996 it has grown from success to success. Given the enthusiasm and energy of our staff and volunteers, and the love which the local community have for their cinema, perhaps this is not really any surprise.

But it could have been so very different. Had it not been for the public campaign started by Jon Webber in 1995 The Curzon could by now be a bingo hall, supermarket, church or wine bar.

People love The Curzon and want to see it not only survive, but to develop and grow. This is demonstrated no better than by the huge growth in audience numbers since we took over the cinema in 1996.

When in 1920, the local press reported proposals to enlarge the cinema it was said that “Clevedon will have a structure of which it will have every reason to be proud”. Certainly it was true then, and it remains true today.

So we intend to mark our 10th anniversary by celebrating our first ten years, and to look forward to our next ten years.
