Housewives' Choice (U)

82 mins

A fascinating, entertaining selection of films from the BFI National Archive that explores the lives of British housewives from the 1920s to the 1950s - an era when many housewives had good reasons to be desperate.

Not only did they have to look after their families in an age of depression, war and austerity, but they did so without the consumer durables that we now consider essential.

The programme includes documentaries, propaganda films and adverts; find out how Horlicks saved a marriage, learn essential household tips in the Hints and Hobbies series, and join 50s TV superstar Elizabeth Allan for a shopping trip round Harrods.
