Can
you help? Could you organise an event?
Perhaps you belong to a group or organisation who could hold an event
to raise funds for the Curzon Community Cinema. If
you would like to discuss this, or have any ideas you think we ought to
hear, please contact Hilary Neal, our Fundraising Director on fundraising@curzon.org.uk
or via the cinema.

‘Raise
the Roof’ fundraising campaign
to raise £170,000 for restoration of the roof.
The new campaign was
launched at the Curzon’s Open Day on Sunday 23rd April, which marked
the 94th Birthday of a cinema that is believed to be the oldest purpose-built,
continuously operated cinema in the world.
One
of the Curzon’s celebrity Patrons, film and stage actor Alan Rickman,
is fronting the campaign, which aims to achieve the fundraising target
so that roof restoration work can be completed during 2007. Although Alan
Rickman was unable to be at the Curzon Open Day because of filming commitments,
he made an appeal to the local community to support the fundraising campaign,
by saying “The Curzon is such a unique community facility. Please
help to preserve it for future generations.”
Curzon Vice-Chair
and Director of Fundraising, Hilary Neal said, “We are delighted
that Alan has agreed to support our first major fundraising campaign.
We need the whole community to get behind this appeal and we are confident
that such is the love and support for The Curzon from local people, that
the campaign will be a huge success.
“This
campaign is vital, as the roof is in a very poor state and is deteriorating
rapidly. This deterioration has to be arrested to prevent further damage
to the building fabric and to enable the internal restoration phases to
happen.”
There are three main
ways that people can make donations to support the campaign.
- Firstly, there
are individual ‘Tile Postcards’ that supporters can purchase
from the cinema Box Office when they come to see a film. These are only
£1 each, and if everyone who sees a film at The Curzon over the
next year buys one ‘tile’ this would raise nearly one third
of the fundraising target.
- Secondly people
can sponsor a ‘Stack of Tiles’ at £5 per stack, or
in multiples of £5.
- Thirdly, for those
that can afford a regular commitment, Roof Tile Covenants are available
that involve a monthly covenant payment to The Curzon by standing order
– from £5 per month upwards.
Tile postcards and
the tiles sponsorship and covenant leaflets can be obtained form the Curzon
Box Office, or downloaded here:

| The
Curzon Lottery |
| On
21st April 2001, The Curzon Cinema launched its very own Lottery,
with a
DAILY top prize of £10,000!
The lottery is just one of a range of ways which Curzon supporters
can use to help in reaching our fundraising target of £700,000
in matched funding towards our Restoration Project.
This
is part of a national scheme run by The Great
Weather Lottery, further details are avaliable from
their web
site. |
 |
All
you have to do is choose your six numbers
(each one from 0 to 9) and they are matched in sequence against
the temperatures for six worldwide destinations
(last digit, temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit: e.g. a temperature
of "29" would produce a winning number "9").
Three correct numbers wins you £2,
four numbers wins £20,
five numbers wins £200,
and matching all six numbers wins £10,000. |
December 2004: we had a £10,000 winner...
The key aspects
of this Lottery are:
- The chance
to win £10,000 every weekday.
- Only costs
£1 per week (that's 20p per entry)
- The odds
of winning are considerably better than the National Lottery!
- Winners notified
automatically by post.
- Players can
also check results at www.theweatherlottery.com
or by ringing
0113 203 1300, or by checking in the Daily Telegraph.
- No messy
scratchcards.
- No cash handling,
as everything is sorted out by Standing Order.
- Entry open
to everyone over 18 & and not just Curzon supporters.
| Out
of every £1 line entered, the Curzon will receive 35p, with
45p going in prizes and the remaining 20p in administration.
All the prize money is held in trust, and prizes are guaranteed
by Lloyds of London.
So, if
you fancy the chance of winning yourself a tidy little sum,
and helping out the Curzon's restoration efforts at the same
time why not have a go - it's dead easy to enter.
For further
details about the lottery scheme please contact Hilary Neal,

The "Gift
Aid" system has now replaced the "Charitable Deed of Covenant".
What
is a "Gift Aid donation" ?
This is a
declaration you make when you give a one-off donation or wish
to make regular payments to the charity. Gift Aid donations will
help us pay for further minor improvements to the theatre but
most importantly will help us build up our reserves to be used
as 'matched funding' against a successful Lottery grant for the
restoration and refurbishment of this unique theatre.
It's simple.
For very £1 you donate to the Curzon Cinema, the Cinema can claim
a further 28p back from the Inland Revenue via the GIFT AID scheme.
- Think it
sounds to good to be true? We did as well, but there's no catch!
- Just imagine
how much quicker we could achieve our fundraising total with an
extra 28p for every £1 you give! That's 28% quicker!
- Simply download
a form (below) or ask for a GIFT AID declaration when you donate
to the cinema.
- Once you've
signed a GIFT AID declaration, the Curzon will be able to claim
back the tax benefit on any sums that you donated.
- All we will
ask for is your name and address, the charity's name, a description
of donations to which the declaration relates (i.e. Restoration
work) and a declaration that the donations are to be treated as
Gift Aid donations. You must pay an amount of income tax and/or
capital gains tax equal to the tax deducted from your donations.
Other charities
have found GIFT AID to be very helpful……..
"Being able
to ask people to gift aid their donations has greatly increased
our income. Most people able to use Gift Aid have done so and
the administration has been very simple which is important to
a small charity"
Bill Giles, Director of Fundraising, Contact a Family.
"Gift Aid
has been really worthwhile. For a small investment we have been
able to generate over £400,000 extra over the last year - and
this will increase in years to come. It's a real bonus"
Alan Gosschalk, Fundraising Director, Shelter.

One form -
and that's it! Simply pick up a leaflet and form from our foyer
or download it here.
Feel free
to ask us if you'd like more details about how it all works.
It's a great way to help the Curzon, and any amount you decide
to give is appreciated.
