Education and the Curzon’s Role

The Curzon Cinema is committed to providing learning opportunities for all sectors of the community.

Education and Learning Co-ordinator

The Heritage Lottery funding has both enabled us to progress our plans to refurbish the building and to appoint an Education Officer, Cathy Poole.
Programme plans include:

  • Senior Screenings
  • Curriculum-based activities for Primary and Speschools
  • Media and film related day schools for Secondary schools
  • Modern Foreign Language films introduced by a native speaker for those studying MFL
  • Visits and tours by local community and school groups
  • Work with the Curzon Youth Panel on making films and developing their own film club, The Reelers. Find them on Facebook and Twitter
  • Developing a Kids’ Club for younger children

The Start Programme

We are delighted that we were selected by the Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts to participate in the Start programme. This enables us to provide opportunities throughout the school year for activity with 8 partner schools working with a total of 493 pupils.

The programme is about introducing children to the arts, inspiring them to find out more, and participation in creative activity. We are working with Ravenswood and Westhaven Special schools and All Saints, Mary Elton, St Andrews, St Nicholas Chantry, St John’s and Yeo Moor Primary schools, all of whom will make 3 visits during the course of the school year.

The Curzon Youth Panel

The Curzon Youth Panel meets on a regular basis. The young people presented their views about the Curzon to the successful Lottery assessment day and have made their own documentary films about the Curzon’s refurbishment. They have developed a Film Club for their peers, for young people aged 13-19, The Reelers.

Senior Screenings

Senior Screenings take place once a month on a Wednesday afternoon at 2.00pm. We offer an introduction and a post screening discussion with complimentary refreshments after the screening. (The kiosk will be open so that you can purchase items prior to the screening.) We focus on making the cinema s accessible as possible and encourage group visits.

Saturday Morning Pictures

We are at development stage for a scheme for children and their parents to come to see films at the week end. If you are interested in being part of a parent focus group, please email education@curzon.org.uk

The Curzon is seeking Exhibition Guides

The Heritage Lottery Award means that the Curzon Cinema there will be many more opportunities for young people and for the community to see and learn about both the building itself and the Curzon Collection through educational events, guided talks and tours.

We need Learning Volunteers who can work with families and other visitors so that they get the most out of their visit to the exhibition. Volunteer training will be provided. We need Guides for shifts at evenings, 6.30-7.45pm and at week ends (1230-1.45pm and 6.30-7.45)pm and 12.30-1.45pm during the school holidays .
