One of the best remembered
of British built non-standard gauge projectors is the
Specto range. Perhaps more thought of as a post WW2 production
Specto were in fact introduced in 1935 by the Danek Co.
of Farnham Royal and then Windsor.
Excluding the War years the
Specto’s were in production for over 30 years ultimately
becoming Specto Ltd. of Windsor. The Specto is a well
respected machine and it held its design right up to the
end. The most important aspect of the Specto is the gearbox
which runs in an oil bath. It also has a cam operated
intermittent and a swing open gate. The Specto was produced
in all three non-standard gauges, 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm.
Dual gauge machines were also
produced. They have been adapted to many applications
through the years and are a projector that many enthusiasts
started their hobby with. Many survive with lamp conversions
and even adapted sound heads.
